Review of the Week: hickey

By George Manley | Dec 19th, 2008

This week I took a look back at the last two Review of the Week stories on ManleysMission, and I realized an unintentional theme was present. Sid Mashburn and Billy Reid are both young, American fashion brands, which produce much of there clothing here in the United States. This week’s review is no different: hickey, by Hickey Freeman.

You’ve probably heard of Hart Schaffner Marx and Hickey Freeman, two of the oldest tailored clothing brands in the United States; however, you have most likely not heard of the new label under the Hartmarx umbrella, called hickey.

The hickey brand was launched in 2006 to appeal to the younger, more fashion forward, Hickey Freeman customer. The hickey customer is described as the man with a “renegade Americana” spirit, and this is evident in hickey’s choice of the marijuana leaf as its logo.

The hickey collection has everything you need to hit the streets or the office in style: tailored suit separates, skinny ties, fitted oxford dress shirts, and knitted cashmere hoodies. Many of the pieces in the collection have a little “flair,” which let you show off your wild side; however, everything in the collection follows the strict manufacturing standards long associated with Hickey Freeman. The tailored pieces in the hickey collection are all produced at the Hickey Freeman tailored clothing factory in Rochester, New York.

One thing I was not happy with was the sport-shirt sizing on the dress shirts: S, M, L, etc. I loved the heavy royal oxford cloth, but found the shirts were either too big in the body or too short in the sleeves to fit me properly. I admit, I have monkey arms; however, my dimensions are never a problem when dress shirts are offered in exact-sleeve sizing.

The only free-standing hickey store can be found in Manhattan’s stylish shopping district: SOHO; however, the hickey collection is wholesaled, and can be found in over 30 fine men’s clothiers in the U.S. and Canada; visit for more details.
